DOHA / PR: The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy have appointed AECOM as the Project Manager and Ramboll as the Design Consultant for Al Rayyan Stadium.

‘We are rapidly making progress, well on schedule to deliver all stadia long before fans arrive for the 2022 FIFA World Cup,’ said Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy.

‘We are looking forward to working with our partners on Al Rayyan Stadium to build an amazing sporting facility that both serves the local community and Al Rayyan Sports Club, whose colours have been worn by the likes of Fernando Hierro, Frank de Boer and Ronald de Boer – one of our Bid Ambassadors.’

All contracts on Al Rayyan Stadium will incorporate the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy’s Workers’ Welfare Standards. Contractual enforcement of these standards and a rigorous four-tier auditing system will guarantee international best practice on Al Rayyan Stadium and all venue and accommodation sites.

The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy will work with both firms to develop environmentally-friendly outdoor cooling technologies in the stadium, training sites, adjacent fan zone and other areas where fans, team delegations, match officials, media representatives and football administrators will congregate.

The stadium will contain an open-air, natural grass pitch that can be cooled to 26 degrees Celsius, with shaded spectator stands that can be cooled to between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius – both using state-of-the-art green technologies.

The new capacity of Al Rayyan Stadium will be approximately 40,000 and will include a modular top tier.  Following the tournament, the modular upper tier will be disassembled and used to build football facilities in developing countries that lack sporting infrastructure, in coordination with FIFA.

Rigorous studies and local surveys are being undertaken to ensure that the Al Rayyan Stadium and the surrounding Precinct will form an important part of the economic development of the municipality.

Project Manager:

CH2M HILL, the Programme Management Consultant for the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, will supervise both AECOM and Ramboll to ensure the successful delivery of the Al Rayyan Stadium and Precinct in line with the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy’s Vision, Mission and Strategic Goals.

AECOM were earlier appointed as the Design Consultant on Al Wakrah Stadium. Following the appointment for Al Rayyan, AECOM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John M. Dionisio said, ‘We are delighted to be awarded a second stadium contract from the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy. We are honoured to be entrusted with such a high-profile programme that is establishing Qatar as an international sports venue and is a beacon for sports development in the Middle East.’

AECOM will develop a world-class health, safety and environmental programme for the Stadium and Precinct and assist the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy in fulfilling FIFA’s venue specifications. AECOM is responsible for the overall management, strategy and implementation of the project.

Design Consultant:

Ramboll will work with the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, CH2M HILL and AECOM throughout the design and delivery process to ensure compliance with all design standards and sustainability requirements, as well as all local and international building, construction and safety codes relevant to the project.

Ramboll’s long history in Qatar and in-depth knowledge of cooling technology will ensure that the stadium is designed in a sustainable and considered manner. Ramboll’s focus on sustainable city development is firmly aligned to the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy’s commitment to a carbon neutral tournament and ensuring a lasting legacy after 2022 in line with the Qatar National Vision for 2030.

‘We are delighted that the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy has selected and trusts us to meet the ambitious engineering challenge of designing a cooled, open stadium,’ said Lars Ostenfeld Riemann, Ramboll Group Market Director, Buildings. ‘It is, by all measures, a significant task that requires us to mobilise our best people to innovate and overcome the technical challenges and meet the client’s aspirations for the World Cup which we look forward to delivering.’
