SAN JOSE: Japan completed a magnificent campaign by winning the Under-17 Women’s World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Spain in the final at the National Stadium.

The Japanese team dominated the tournament, scoring 23 goals and conceding only one in the finals which began on March 15.

Japan — also the seniors Women’s World Cup holders – won every match by at least two goals in securing the country’s first Under-17 Women’s World Cup title.

In the third place match Italy edged Venezuela 2-0 on penalties after a 4-4 draw.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter praised Costa Rica’s organising work as host though its team were less impressive, losing all three of their matches on the way to early elimination.
