BUENOS AIRES: Luis Segura has been confirmed as president of the Argentinian football federation to complete the mandate of Julio Grondona until October 25 next year.

Grondona, AFA chief since 1979 and senior vice-president of world federation FIFA, died in July at 82. Segura, his deputy, then stepped up as acting president.

Speculation that former national coach Carlos Bilardo and new Estudiantes president Juan Sebastian Veron might stand against Segura proved unfounded.

The 50 assembly members thus voted Segura, the president of  Argentinos Juniors, into office unanimously for what he admitted and warned will be “a most difficult year.”

In administrative changes Miguel Lemme, president of Defensa y Justicia, will hand over the treasurer’s role to Banfield chief Eduardo Spinosa. Confirmed as vice-presidents were the presidents of River Plate and Boca, Rodolfo D’Onofrio and Daniel Angelici respectively.

Uncertainty remains over whether Miguel Angel Silva, the vice-president of the Grondona family club Arsenal, will stay n as secretary-general.
