ATHENS: Greek champions Olympiacos have agreed a new kit deal with Adidas.
The German sportswear giant will replace rival brand Puma as the supplier of matchday and training wear to the Athens-based club from the start of next season.
The announcement was a shaft of good news for the club after owner Vangelis Marinakis was arraigned by a court earlier this week to answer charges related to matchfixing.
It will also produce a range of replica merchandise, set to launch this summer, for Olympiacos supporters.
Dealing with the Adidas contract, Christian Karembeu, the former France international who is now the club’s official strategy consultant, said: “Olympiacos is the greatest football organisation in Greece and should be therefore collaborating with the very best,
“Our club goes beyond the Greek standards and this is why we needed a leading partner in the field of sports equipment, such as Adidas, which will fully meet our needs in every aspect.”
Marianna Rebapi, the brand director for Adidas in south-east Europe, said: “It is an honour for us to collaborate with the most successful football club in Greece and we are delighted that from this year Olympiacos will be joining Adidas’ roster, along with Europe’s top clubs.”
The deal comes amid reports that Olympiacos chairman Vangelis Marinakis will appear in court in June to face anti-corruption charges. Marinakis is one of 16 people alleged to have conspired to fix soccer matches in Greece. He denies the allegations.
Olympiacos have already retained their Superleague Greece title. They are 12 points clear at the top of the table with two games of the 2014/15 season left to play.
