SEOUL: Chung Mong-joon, a former opponent of Sepp Blatter within FIFA, is considering launching a comeback in the election triggered by the president’s impending departure.

Chung. from the billionaire family which owns World Cup sponsor Hyundai, has said he “carefully consider” his position after Blatter’s announcement on Tuesday.

He vanished off the FIFA executive committee after 11 years in 2011 when he was ousted as Asia’s FIFA vice-president by Jordan’s Prince Ali bin Al Hussein. In that election Prince Ali was supported by Blatter who clashed repeatedly with Chung.

Chung, speaking at a news conference in Seoul at the KFA headquarters, said: “I will carefully consider running for the FIFA presidency. I will decide after meeting international football leaders and listening to their opinions.”

Former Brazil start Zico has said he is also considering standing for the leadership of the world game. Zico is a former sports minister back in Brazil.

Other possible contenders include Prince Ali – who lost to Blatter by 133-73 last Friday – UEFA president Michel Platini and immediate previous candidates such as Jerome Champagne (France), Michael Van Praag (Holland) and Luis Figo (Portugal).

It is also considered likely that Asian confederation president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa from Bahrain or Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah (Kuwait) may stand.
