ZURICH: FIFA president Sepp Blatter has declined an invitation to appear before a United States Senate subcommittee hearing into world football corruption.

The 79-year-old Swiss Blatter was personally invited to answer on Wednesday in the Committee some questions about the corruption scandal. FIFA declined on his behalf, said a spokesperson of the committee chairman, Senator Jerry Moran.

A week ago Blatter, who has announced his resignation, said in an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag that “until everything is clarified, I will not take any travel risk.”

The US Department of Justice is currently overseeing an investigation which has led to the indictment of senior football officials, included two FIFA vice-presidents.

Blatter did not attend the final of Women’s World Cup in Vancouver earlier this month but says he intends to be in Russia later this month for the draw for qualifying games for the 2018 World Cup.
