MADRID: Atletico Madrid made sure of their place in the Champions League knock-out stages with a comfortable 2-0 win against Galatasaray at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

Antoine Griezmann scored a goal in each half as Diego Simeone’s side extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine matches.

In doing so, Atletico joined Benfica on 10 points and those two teams will contest top spot in Group C in Portugal next month in the final round of fixtures.

Raul Jimenez scored twice as Benfica fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with FC Astana, which was ultimately enough to seal their place in the last 16.

Following a promising start, Patrick Twumasi and Marin Anicic had given Astana the lead, but a Jimenez-inspired Benfica gradually drew level.

The result ended Astana’s already narrow hopes of progressing to the knockout stages but keeps them in contention for a Europa League place thanks to Galatasaray’s defeat to Atletico.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic marked his return to his hometown club by helping PSG to a 5-0 Champions League victory over Malmo at the Swedbank Stadion.

Ibrahimovic struck the French champions’ third goal against the club where he began his professional career before leaving for Ajax in 2001.

It was the first time the 34-year-old Sweden striker had played a competitive match there since his departure and he paid for the match to be shown on a big screen in Stortorget, the city’s main square.

Angel Di Maria scored twice while Adrien Rabiot and Lucas Moura were also on target as PSG confirmed their place in the knockout phase of the Champions League as Group A runners-up behind Real Madrid, who survived a late scare to win 4-3 at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice while Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal also scored to relieve some of the pressure on Rafael Benitez, who was given a vote of confidence by president Florentino Perez following Saturday’s rout by Barcelona.

However, Benitez will have watched the last 12 minutes through his fingertips as Shakhtar fired late goals through Brazilians Alex Teixeira, who struck the first of his two from the spot, and Dentinho.

Manchester United’s chances of making the last 16 were left in the balance following a frustrating and disappointing goalless draw against PSV Eindhoven.

Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial were restored to the starting line-up, but neither could conjure up a sparkling performance on the 10th anniversary of George Best’s death.

How they could have done with a sprinkling of magic from their most famous number seven on Wednesday night.

Louis van Gaal’s team created plenty of chances, but in the opposition box they looked toothless.

Morgan Schneiderlin, Martial, Jesse Lingard and Memphis Depay – who was substituted against his old club after another poor showing – wasted chances and United played out their first European goalless draw at Old Trafford in over five years.

Victory would have sent Van Gaal’s team through, but now they must win at Group B leaders Wolfsburg in their final match next month to guarantee their place in the knockout stages.

Wolfsburg had earlier boosted their last-16 prospects after winning 2-0 atCSKA Moscow.

Substitute Andre Schurrle scored the second having inspired an own goal from Igor Akinfeev earlier in the second half, securing three points in one of this season’s most competitive groups.

Wolfsburg move onto nine points in Group B with just that home match against Manchester United remaining, while CSKA are just about in contention to finish third and progress to the Europa League.

Mario Mandzukic scored the only goal as Juventus leapfrogged Manchester City in Group D with a 1-0 win in Turin.

The Croatian struck after 18 minutes at the Juventus Stadium as the home side not only secured their place in the last 16 but put themselves in pole position to claim top spot.

The Italians were good value for their victory, with reported City target Paul Pogba outstanding, but the injury-hit visitors had a host of chances in an entertaining contest.

Substitute Raheem Sterling had one of the best of them as he shot wide late on while Fernando had a header turned onto the post and Fernandinho blasted over when well placed.

City again looked vulnerable in defence without captain Vincent Kompany and are still missing the craft of David Silva while Sergio Aguero is not fully match-fit. They will also be concerned to have lost Joe Hart to injury late on.

Sevilla’s hopes of reaching the knock-out stages ended in Germany with a 4-2 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach.

The hosts kept alive their hopes of a third-place finish in Group D and Europa League football as they stormed into a commanding lead, courtesy of strikes from Lars Stindl, Fabian Johnson and Raffael.

Vitolo pulled one back for Sevilla but Stindl immediately restored the three-goal cushion, before Ever Banega’s injury-time penalty for the Spaniards.
