MADRID: Real Madrid made Roma pay for wasted opportunities as they secured a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the sixth season in a row with a 2-0 win at the Estadio Bernabeu.

The Italians needed to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg and but created enough chances during the first half to be at least on level terms.

However both Edin Dzeko and Mohamed Salah missed when played clear through on goal.

Eventually Madrid made the breakthrough when in-form Cristiano Ronaldo scored from close range after 64 minutes. Within minutes he created a second goal for James Rodriguez to end any Roma hopes of a recovery.

Ronaldo’s goal was his 40th in all competitions, the sixth successive season he has reached the mark.

In the night’s other tie Wolfsburg beat Gent 1-0 to complete a 4-2 aggregate success and book their expected place in the quarter-finals.

Andre Schurrle scored the winner on the night after 74 minutes in Germany.
