LONDON: Barcelona’s Luis Suarez has been hailed as winner of the ESM Golden Shoe for Europe’s league leading marksmen for season 2015-16.

The Uruguayan was joint winner with Cristiano Ronaldo on 31 goals in 2013-14. This past season he set a personal record by scoring 40 goals. Suarez is the only individual to have broken the Ronaldo-Leo Messi command of the prize since fellow Uruguayan Diego Forlan in 2009.

Players’ goals totals are multiplied by a 1-2-3 ranking of the countries according to the UEFA Ranking of last July 1. That means the goals from numbers one (Spain) to five (Portugal) are doubled, goals from places six  (France) to 22 (Denmark) are multiplied by 1.5.

As in previous years the Golden Shoe does not consider goals in play-off competitions so the leagues in Belgium, Israel, Cyprus and Romania are judged as already completed.
