LONDON: Lionel Messi is powering ever closer to what would be his fourth Golden Shoe in seven years as the leading marksmen in European league competition.

Messi scored twice more at the weekend to extend his lead to four goals (and eight points) over Sporting Clube’s Bas Dost.

Players’ goals totals are multiplied by a 1-2-3 ranking of the countries according to the UEFA Ranking of last July 1. That means the goals from numbers one (Spain) to five (Portugal) are doubled, goals from places six  (France) to 22 (Denmark) are multiplied by 1.5.

As in previous years the Golden Shoe does not consider goals in play-off competitions.
