MUNICH: Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has added his voice to the weight of concern over the €222m transfer of Brazilian superstar Neymar from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain.

Rummenigge is both chairman of German champions Bayern Munich and of the European Club Association which provides him with a seat on the executive committee of European governing body UEFA.

He said, in an interview with Sport Bild: “During Operation Neymar, I asked myself: what would be the most important: Neymar or the Allianz Arena? I must say that, for us, the Allianz Arena is much more important, by far.

“The transfer of Neymar has even cost more than the total spent for the stadium. At Bayern, we have a different philosophy: we do not want or even can do anything like that.

“Before the introduction of financial fair play in 2011, I was in front of the European Commission several times with Michel Platini. We had a goal: to introduce a salary cap on a European scale. This proposal has always been rejected. “I wonder why?”

Rummenigge is not expected to stand, later this year, for a further term as ECA chairman.
