ZURICH: Peru captain Paolo Guerrero will miss the World Cup in Russia next year after being banned for one year for FIFA after failing a dope test.

Guerrero tested positive for cocaine afetmetabolite benzoylecgonine, deemed a stimulant by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

He was tested after a World Cup qualifying tie against Argentina in Buenos Aires on October 5 and was ruled to have contravened article 63 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

The suspension period starts from November 3, the date Guerrero was suspended provisionally by the chairman of the FIFA disciplinary committee.

The suspension covers all matches, including domestic, international, friendly and official fixtures.

The 33-year-old Flamengo forward, who played previously in Germany with Bayern Munich and Hamburg, had denied using any type of stimulant.
