ACCRA: Kwesi Nyantakyi, head of the Ghana Football Association and a member of the FIFA Council, has been detained after a complaint from the state President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Nyantakyi is the second CAF delegate on FIFA Council to run into domestic difficulties in the past six weeks after Constant Omari Selemani in DR Congo.

A spokesman for Akufo-Addo’s office told local media that Nyantakyi had been recorded using the name of the president and other senior government officials to try to persuade “potential investors” to part with money.

The video was recorded by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and is due to be broadcast on June 6. News agency Reuters described the documentary as an inquiry into corruption among Ghana’s football officials and associates.

The spokesman said: “The president after consultations is fully satisfied that a prima facie basis has been established for criminal investigations to be launched into the conduct of the president of the football association.”

Nyantakyi, 49, has been the president of the GFA since 2005 and a member of the FIFA Council since 2016. He became president of West African Football Union Zone B in 2011 when he was also appointed as a member of FIFA’s Olympic football organising committee. He has also served on the FIFA associations committee and on the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football.

He has been the subject of similar allegations in the past and has always denied them.

Nyantakyi is the second CAF delegate on FIFA Council to run into domestic difficulties in the past six weeks.

In April Constant Omari Selemani, president of the football association of the Democratic Republic of Congo, was detained briefly over allegations – which he has denied – of misuse of funds and embezzlement of around $1m on behalf of national and club teams of the DRC.
