LONDON: Tottenham ended a bleak run of three defeats at home and abroad by winning 2-1 at Brighton with goals from Harry Kane and Erik Lamela.

Kane smashed in a first half penalty after a Glenn Murray bizarrely stuck out an arm to block Kieran Trippier’s free kick when in the wall.

Lamela then scored in the 76th minute to seemingly confirm the three points for Tottenham though Anthony Knockaert’s stoppage time strike gave them some nervy minutes.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino had been feeling the pressure after three straight defeats but the win at a rainy Amex Stadium will do wonders for confidence in his squad.

Kane’s return to the scoresheet made it an even better evening for Spurs as his penalty in the first half ended a five-game goalless run and also drew him level with Jermain Defoe on 143 goals for the club.

Kane’s goal was his 143th for Tottenham in all competitions, lifting him level with Jermain Defoe as the joint-fifth top scorer for the club. He has scored more penalties (13) than any other player in the Premier League since the start of the 2015-16 season.

Brighton have not won in four games since seeing off Manchester United in August.

Paulo Gazzaniga became the third goalkeeper to appear in the Premier League this season for Tottenham, more than any other club has used.

United held

Promoted Wolves proved they belong in the Premier League with a superb performance in a 1-1 draw at Manchester United in front of a crowd who included Sir Alex Ferguson.

The former United manager was given a standing ovation by fans on his first return to Old Trafford since undergoing emergency brain surgery in May.

Brazil midfielder Fred put United ahead with his first goal for the club but Joao Moutinho grabbed a deserved equaliser eight minutes into the second half as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side continued to attack.

United keeper David De Gea subsequently denied Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves and substitute Adama Traore, while at the other end, Rui Patricio tipped over Jesse Lingard’s strike and dealt a Marouane Fellaini header.

Current United manager Jose Mourinho questioned the attitude of his players after the draw interrupted a run of wins over Burnley, Watford and Young Boys.

Mourinho said: “Not a good performance, not a good result. But a fair result.  Wolves play like I like to play which is like the World Cup final. That’s the attitude I like my teams to have every match. We didn’t have that, they did.

“They play every ball with every second with the maximum intensity and desire and we didn’t.  This is something you learn when you are a kid in the academy, you don’t need experiences at the highest level to learn that.

“It’s not about who has the biggest names, it is my team – and I expect my team to play better than we did.

“It is a basic law of football, you have to play at the maximum of your potential, unless you are playing in such a weak league against such weak opponents where playing at 30pc of your potential is enough. We all know that is not the case.

“I can’t explain difference of attitude because I never had a difference of attitude. For me is difficult to explain that.”

Liverpool keep on winning

The weekend’s joint league leaders Liverpool beat Southampton 3-0 at Anfield where all the damage was done in the opening 45 minutes.

A Wesley Hoedt own goal gave Jurgen Klopp’s men the lead after just 10 minutes before Joel Matip, playing ahead of Joe Gomez at centre half, headed in a second after 21 minutes.

Mohamed Salah scored his third of the season on the stroke of half time as he followed up Xherdan Shaqiri’s excellent free kick that smacked the bar to extend Liverpool’s perfect start to the season to seven straight wins.

Sergio Aguero marked his 300th appearance for Manchester City with his 205th goal as he gave the visitors the lead in a 5-0 win over promoted Cardiff after half an hour.

Bernardo Silva quickly doubled the lead for Pep Guardiola’s side, who put the game to bed just before half time through Ilkay Gundogan.  Riyad Mahrez then added two goals in the second half as City kept up their pursuit of Liverpool at the top of the table by remaining two points behind them in second.

Earlier in the week Aguero signed a one-year contract extension to extend his City stay until 2021. The Argentina striker and City’s record goalscorer last season will stretch his association with the club to a decade if he sees out the rest of his contract.

The 30-year-old has won three Premier League titles and scored 204 goals since joining City from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

Burnley revive

Burnley eased any pressure on manager Sean Dyche with an emphatic 4-0 win over Bournemouth at Turf Moor.

Matej Vydra claimed the breakthrough six minutes before half time and the excellent Aaron Lennon doubled the home side’s advantage just before the interval.  In the final 10 minutes Ashley Barnes struck twice.

Huddersfield lost 3-1 at Leicester despite grabbing an early lead. The opener by Zanka – as Mathias Jørgensen is known – was cancelled out by Kelechi Iheanacho just before the 20-minute mark.  Claude Puel looks to have some player on his hands with James Maddison, and it was the yong England hope that put the Foxes ahead on 66 minutes.

Jamie Vardy added a fine third goal 15 minutes from time to leave Huddersfield bottom of the table.

Newcastle have a poor recent record in London and were relieved to escape with a point froma 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.

The weekend’s opening game saw Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his fifth goal of the season as Fulham came from behind to grab a 1-1 draw with Watford at Craven Cottage.

The Serbia striker flicked home his fifth goal of the season with 12 minutes remaining to deny the visitors a fifth win from six Premier League games.

Andre Gray had opened the scoring inside two minutes but the Hornets had to settle for a point after spurning a number of chances to double their advantage.

Whites boss Slavisa Jokanovic, facing his former club for the first time since leaving Vicarage Road in 2015, almost saw his side snatch a late winner when Mitrovic’s header was tipped on to the crossbar by Ben Foster.
