Promoted Wolves proved they belong in the Premier League with a superb performance in a 1-1 draw at Manchester United in front of a crowd who included Sir Alex Ferguson.

Current United manager Jose Mourinho questioned the attitude of his players after the draw interrupted a run of wins over Burnley, Watford and Young Boys.

Mourinho said: “Not a good performance, not a good result. But a fair result.  Wolves play like I like to play which is like the World Cup final. That’s the attitude I like my teams to have every match. We didn’t have that, they did.

“They play every ball with every second with the maximum intensity and desire and we didn’t.  This is something you learn when you are a kid in the academy, you don’t need experiences at the highest level to learn that.

“It’s not about who has the biggest names, it is my team – and I expect my team to play better than we did.

“It is a basic law of football, you have to play at the maximum of your potential, unless you are playing in such a weak league against such weak opponents where playing at 30pc of your potential is enough. We all know that is not the case.

“I can’t explain difference of attitude because I never had a difference of attitude. For me is difficult to explain that.”

Liverpool keep on winning

The weekend’s joint league leaders Liverpool beat Southampton 3-0 at Anfield where all the damage was done in the opening 45 minutes.

A Wesley Hoedt own goal gave Jurgen Klopp’s men the lead after just 10 minutes before Joel Matip, playing ahead of Joe Gomez at centre half, headed in a second after 21 minutes.

Mohamed Salah scored his third of the season on the stroke of half time as he followed up Xherdan Shaqiri’s excellent free kick that smacked the bar to extend Liverpool’s perfect start to the season to seven straight wins.

Sergio Aguero marked his 300th appearance for Manchester City with his 205th goal as he gave the visitors the lead in a 5-0 win over promoted Cardiff after half an hour.

Bernardo Silva quickly doubled the lead for Pep Guardiola’s side, who put the game to bed just before half time through Ilkay Gundogan.  Riyad Mahrez then added two goals in the second half as City kept up their pursuit of Liverpool at the top of the table by remaining two points behind them in second.

Burnley eased any pressure on manager Sean Dyche with an emphatic 4-0 win over Bournemouth at Turf Moor.

Matej Vydra claimed the breakthrough six minutes before half time and the excellent Aaron Lennon doubled the home side’s advantage just before the interval.  In the final 10 minutes Ashley Barnes struck twice.

Huddersfield lost 3-1 at Leicester despite grabbing an early lead. The opener by Zanka – as Mathias Jørgensen is known – was cancelled out by Kelechi Iheanacho just before the 20-minute mark.  Claude Puel looks to have some player on his hands with James Maddison, and it was the yong England hope that put the Foxes ahead on 66 minutes.

Jamie Vardy added a fine third goal 15 minutes from time to leave Huddersfield bottom of the table.

Newcastle have a poor recent record in London and were relieved to escape with a point froma 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.

The weekend’s opening game saw Aleksandar Mitrovic scored his fifth goal of the season as Fulham came from behind to grab a 1-1 draw with Watford at Craven Cottage.
