KIEV: Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 700th career goal for club and country during Portugal’s Euro 2020 qualifying defeat in Ukraine, who booked their place in the finals.

With the defending European champions trailing 2-0, the Juventus star fired home a 73rd-minute penalty which wasn’t enough to stop his side losing the Group B clash.

Ronaldo’s great rival Lionel Messi has scored 672 goals in 828 career matches for Barcelona and Argentina, with the Portuguese star moving to 700 in 974 games.

Ronaldo scored his first goal almost exactly 17 years ago and became the sixth player in history to reach 700 goals.

The full-time whistle in Kiev sparked wild scenes of celebration as Ukraine’s sixth victory from seven games moved them onto 19 points and an automatic spot at the Euro 2020 finals.

Portugal, by contrast, are back on 11 points and just one ahead of Serbia – which means they must win their last two fixtures against Lithuania at home and away at Luxembourg to guarantee their place.

Serbia remain in the mix after an Aleksandar Mitrovic brace helped them to a hard-fought 2-1 win against Lithuania.
