DOHA: Qatar has revived the possibility of proposing Doha as the venue for the summer Olympic Games.

The national Olympic committee has submitted asked the International Olympic Committee to be permitted to join “continuous dialogue” about hosting a future Games.

Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and has staged a length, continuous series of international competitions in a wide variety of sports over the past decade.

A statement from QOC president Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani said: “”This proven track-record and wealth of experience, along with our desire to use sport to promote peace and cultural exchange, will form the basis of our discussions.”

The Olympics have never been hosted in the Middle East or wider Arab world though Doha undertook putative bids for 2016 and 2020 Games.

An IOC statement said: “These are ongoing, non-committal discussions that are not necessarily related to a specific edition of the Olympic Games or the Youth Olympic Games, and are an opportunity to explore a project without committing extensive time and resources.”
