BRUSSELS: The 25 top Belgian clubs have voted unanimously to work towards the creation of a Beneleague together with the Dutch championship.
The clubs’ of general assembly voted unanimously for the project. A statement said: “This ambition is based both on respect for the sporting aspirations of the big clubs and on the need for economic stability of other professional clubs.
“The 25 clubs unanimously want to give all the possibilities to the eventual achievement of the Beneleague. The leadership of the Pro League will now play an active role in this project.
The concept has been the subject of speculation for many years.
Now a response it awaited from Dutch Eredivisie as well as the football associations of both countries and European federation UEFA.
A joint basketball league will launch in 2021-22.
