FRANKFURT: Julian Nagelsmann, the hottest young coaching star in European football, has reportedly asked RB Leipzig to release him from his contract so that he can take over at champions Bayern Munich next season.

Leipzig, according to respected publication Kicker, want compensation of €25m. This would make Nagelsmann the most expensive coaching transfer in history. Current record is the €15m Chelsea paid Porto for Andre Villa Boas in 2011.

Nagelsmann was the obvious main Bayern candidate after Hansi Flick announced he wanted early release from his own contract. Flick is believd to be the No1 target for the German DFB as successor to Joachim Low as national team boss in the summer.

Flick’s contract with Bayern also runs until 2023 and club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, has said that a solution will be sought – interpreted as meaning cash.

Leipzig are currently second in the Bundesliga, seven points behind Bayern.
