AMSTERDAM: Frank de Boer has quit as national coach of the Netherlands after their surprise 2-0 defeat by the Czech Republic in the round of 16 at Euro 2020.

In a statement the former national team captain and Ajax coach said: “I have decided not to continue as a national coach.

“Our objective has not been achieved, that is clear. When I was contacted to become a national coach in 2020, I thought it was an honor and a challenge, but I was also aware of the pressure that was going to befall me from the moment I was appointed.

“The pressure is only increasing now and that is not a healthy situation for me, nor for the squad in the run-up to such an important moment for Dutch football on its way to qualifying for the World Cup.”

The KNVB indicated that De Boer’s departure had been settled by mutual agreement.
