KEIR RADNEDGE at WEMBLEY: Joachim Low drew a line under his 15-year career as Germany coach by regretting a late miss by Thomas Muller which quashed any hopes of rescuing their Euro 2020 hopes.

England were leading only 1-0 when the Bayern Munich star ran clear through the middle only to pull his shot wide of a post. Moments later Raheem Sterling scored England’s decisive second goal.

Timo Werner had also wasted a golden chance to give Germany the lead early in the tie.

Low said: “We are all very disappointed – me, the team, the staff. Over the last weeks we invested a lot and the team has worked hard and developed a great spirit but we didn’t take advantage of the two great chances we had with Muller and Werner.”

Summing up the match, Low said: “It was obvious the match would be all about patience. Neither team wanted to take too many risks, especially in defence so it was expected that not many chances would be created and you needed to be clinical if you wanted to succeed.

“England scored on their first opportunity and we didn’t.

“We could have turned the match around with the Muller chance but then England scored again. The team threw in everythng but we were not effective enough. The quality is there but in the knockout stage you always know that every mistake can be decisive.”

Germany’s defeat meant that this was Low’s last match as coach after he announced his intention of stepping down midway through this past season.
