AFC President lauds Continent’s passion for futsal

— Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has hailed the significant strides made in futsal across the Continent while congratulating the Islamic Republic of Iran for securing a record-extending 13th AFC Futsal Asian Cup™ title following the conclusion of the 17th edition of the competition in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sunday.

In a pulsating final showdown at the Bangkok Arena, the Central Asians triumphed 4-1 over arch-rivals Thailand with an electrifying performance, underscoring their dominant displays over the 11-day Continental showpiece that saw them notch 25 goals in the process.

“The AFC Futsal Asian Cup™ stands at the pinnacle of excellence in our Continent in the five-a-side version, serving as a showcase of skill, passion and competition. This edition once again reaffirmed the immense popularity and fervour surrounding futsal,” said Shaikh Salman, emphasising the tournament’s premier status.

“My heartiest congratulations go to the champions Islamic Republic of Iran who have won the title for a record 13th time, while we must also applaud the valiant Thailand for giving us a captivating finale full of exhilarating moments.”

“Our praise must also go to the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran for strengthening the foundations of the sport and this latest triumph is indeed a testament to their tireless efforts and commitment over the years.”

Shaikh Salman also extended his gratitude to the Football Association of Thailand who were hosting the AFC Futsal Asian Cup™ for the third time.

“The Football Association of Thailand and the Local Organising Committee were exceptional and warm hosts and their sincere dedication to hosting the crown jewel of Asian futsal is deeply appreciated,” he said.

“We bid farewell to Thailand 2024 and eagerly await the FIFA Futsal World Cup later this year, when Asia will once again be the focal point. We wish our hosts Uzbekistan the very best of success in their preparations and I am sure, alongside Islamic Republic of Iran, Thailand as well as debutants Afghanistan and Tajikistan, our teams will strive to preserve Asia’s proud legacy at the pinnacle stage of world futsal.”

The 24-team FIFA Futsal World Cup takes place in Uzbekistan from September 14 to October 6, 2024.
