NEW YORK: The United Nations Development Program arm of the United Nations has suspended its partnership with Maria Sharapova following the Russian tennis star’s admittance of a failed drugs test.
The 28-year-old has been working as a goodwill ambassador for the UNDP since February 2007, supporting the agency’s work on poverty and inequality issues around the world.
However, the future of Sharapova’s professional career has been cast into doubt after she revealed that she had tested positive for the banned substance meldonium at January’s Australian Open.
The revelation has led to the UNDP suspending Sharapova from her role while an investigation into the situation continues – a decision that keeps in line with the United Nation’s guidelines on such matters.
A spokesperson said: “The UNDP remains grateful to Maria Sharapova for her support of our work, especially around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster recovery. However, in light of Ms Sharapova’s recent announcement, we last week suspended her role as a goodwill ambassador and any planned activities while the investigation continues.”
Sports equipment manufacturer Head last week extended its endorsement contract but Nike has suspended its relationship with Sharapova and watchmaker Tag Heuer has curtailed talks with the current world No7 over a promotional extension.
