MONACO: Wembley remains clear favourite to win host rights to the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 ahead of UEFA’s decision in three weeks’ time.

Initially Wembley and Munich’s Allianz Arena had been the only two contenders bidding and which could fulfil the necessary transport and accommodation demands set by the European federation.

The German federation’s interest in hosting the entirety of the 2024 finals tournament then shuffled the political potential in Wembley’s favour.

The 2020 finals will see the group stages, second round and quarter-finals staged him 12 cities across Europe.

FA general secretary Alex Horne, in Monaco this week for UEFA meetings, said: “We’re really confident with our bid. We know what the Germans have been saying. We know that they’re thinking about 2024, but nothing has been confirmed.”

UEFA’s executive committee will decide the host cities in Geneva on September 19. Euro 96 was the last major tournament staged in England, while the country also hosted the 1966 World Cup.

The revamped Wembley opened in 2007 and impressed UEFA officials with its staging of the Champions League final in both 2011 and 2013.
